Three roofing options: trapezoidal sheet, panel, shingle

Three things decide a roof covering: the pitch, whether the space below is heated, and how the building is meant to look. Here are the three common options measured against those three.

Trapezoidal sheet

Galvanised or pre-painted galvanised sheet, profiled. It is light, fast to install and works at low pitches. First choice for warehouses, hangars, canopies, perimeter cladding and temporary structures.

It provides no insulation on its own. If the space below is to be heated, a separate insulation layer is needed; nor should sound insulation in rain be expected of it.

Sandwich panel

Cladding and insulation combined in one element. Used where the internal environment must be controlled: factories, workshops, cold stores, heated warehouses. Installation finishes in a single layer, which shortens the programme.

In return, panel thickness and core type must be right from the start; insulation cannot be added later.

Shingle

Bituminous shingle is used on pitched roofs of houses and villas where a tiled look is wanted. It is light and adapts easily to complex roof geometry — hips, turrets, chimney surrounds.

Shingle is not nailed straight onto the trusses. It needs a continuous deck beneath, usually OSB board. A waterproofing membrane is laid over the OSB and the shingle goes on top of that. The three layers are one system; leave one out and it does not work.

Shingle is a covering, not waterproofing. The membrane underneath does the waterproofing.

How much pitch matters

Every covering has a minimum pitch at which it works, stated in the manufacturer's installation instructions. Below that limit a roof will take water even if the product is fitted perfectly. When re-roofing, measure the pitch first and choose the product second.

In short

Unheated wide-span building: trapezoidal sheet. Controlled internal environment: sandwich panel. Pitched house roof where appearance counts: OSB + membrane + shingle.
