Balcony and Stair Railings: Which Profile and Coating to Use
Which profile size and which coating holds up best against salt air for railings on villa and residential projects.

On villa, residential and hotel projects, balcony and stair railings are both a safety element and part of the look — and in the Mediterranean climate, salty air and humidity show up as rust within a few years if the wrong profile and coating are chosen.
Which profile to use
Railing posts are usually made from 40x40 to 60x60 mm square box section, with thinner box section or round pipe for the infill. Stainless steel pipe is also a common choice for the handrail itself — it looks sharper and needs no extra corrosion protection.
Choosing the coating
Bare black steel rusts fast in a coastal setting; hot-dip galvanizing is a long-lasting solution, though its surface texture isn't to everyone's taste on some projects.
Electrostatic powder coating applied over galvanizing gives a good combination of appearance and durability.
When stainless steel is worth it
On balconies with a sea view, directly exposed to wind and salt spray, stainless steel railings (grade A4) cost more up front but make a real difference over time by needing no maintenance. For railings facing inward or further from the sea, painted or galvanized box section is usually enough.
