Which box section size to use for pergolas, carports, fences and other garden structures.

On villa and detached-house gardens, structures like pergolas, carports and fences are mostly built from box section — getting the size right matters for both looks and durability.
What size for a pergola or shade structure
Pergola support posts are usually 60x60 to 100x100 mm square box section, while the top beams are more often 40x80 or 50x100 mm rectangular box section. As the span gets wider (more distance between posts), the wall thickness needs to go up too.
Carports and fencing
For carports, the main supports call for 80x80 mm and up, while the roof beams can get away with a thinner section like 40x60 mm. Garden fences and wire-fence frames use lighter sizes, around 20x20 to 30x30 mm — these sections only hold the frame together, they don't carry load.
Stair and balcony railings, which do double duty as structural and decorative elements, most often use 40x40 mm square profile.
Coating and paint
Any profile used outdoors should be galvanized or electrostatically powder-coated; bare black steel rusts within a few years outdoors. Send us the size and intended use and we can tell you the same day which profile fits your job.
